Phlox paniculata / Garden Phlox

Phlox paniculata
'Nicky'

This is a big, upright phlox that blooms in deep vibrant magenta. The trusses are very large. Every year it has been a striking presence in the Birch garden, but in 2017 they seemed to have disappeared.

I planted it 2012 to take the center spot in the Birch Garden.

It did a lot to brighten up the mass of greenery in the Birch Garden in July.  A little bothered by mildew toward the end of its blooming, but not bad.

Self sows but colors may not come true.

Cut back by 1/2 in June to encourage compactness.  Shear after bloom, just above foliage, to encourage more blooms. For air circulation, cut out all but 4 or 5 stems in a mature clump.

It's there, tucked into a crowded part of the front of the Birch Garden. In 2014 it was among pink zinnias and there were individual clumps rather than a nice full stand of 'Nicky'. The color is definitely magenta.

You can't miss this phlox. It is the brightest deep magenta color! And they keep going well into late summer.

But in 2016 and 2017 I seem to have lost 'Nicky' phlox!
