Camassia
Camassia cusickii
Fat, big bulbs that like wet soil. I planted 10 in 2009.
They are really a great presence in the early spring garden, and made that whole side of the back garden under the maple look great.
Starry blue flowers are pale but have a strong effect. I planted enough to mass them.
They bloom for a long time, through most of May, and since they are one of the few things in flower at that time, they are noticeable.
I don't like the look when the foliage dies out in early June. There is little there to cover it, and it looks unsightly for a while, keeled over and messy. But what delicate blue flowers they have in May.

When the strappy foliage emerges in early May it is a glossy deep green, and very thick. Nothing else in the early spring garden is so green or lush. It's nice with the hot yellow and pink of epimediums and the bright white of the nearby 'Ogon' spirea.

The pretty blue flowers are out in mid to late May. The winterberry hollies, which are late to leaf out, are still bare sticks behind the stand of camasss lilies.

When camassias are gone by the foliage lays down and makes a mat that I need to cut back and clean up in summer. It doesn't get browned like allium foliage, but it does make a mess and I am still trying to figure out what I can plant among the camassias to emerge in that spot after they are gone by.
