Heuchera / Coral Bells

Heuchera
'Beaujolais'
'Green Spice'
'Midnight Rose'

I started with 'Midnight Rose' in 2010, and it is my favorite, with sparse flowers but clear wine colored speckled foliage that absolutely sparkles in the late sunlight at the edge of the garden.  It's beautiful from a distance at the right front edge of the Birch garden.

'Beaujolais' has deep, almost brownish foliage that washes out in the sun.  This one is a large leaved variety. I have several at the front of the Birch Garden, but they do wash out in too much sun there.

They all have shallow roots and tend to frost heave in winter, so keep them mulched. After flowering which isn't much to look at on any coralbells, I cut the tall wands of stems down in early summer. It just looks tidier.

'Green Spice' is a green leaved heuchera. Cool temps intensify the red veins and bright silver on green leaves.  I like this one close up where you can see the variation, and ended up moving it to the edge of the walkway by the patio.

I also added three red leaved heucheras at the foot of the sweet autumn clematis at the side of the deck, but forgot what varieties they are.

2014

The little patch of 'Midnight Rose' on the right of the Birch Garden is a darker, more wine colored coralbell -- sometimes too dark despite the fact that when sun catches it the foliage can sparkle. But it is a nice bit of low edging for the front of the garden.
