The Gardens

Spirea fritschiana / Korean Spirea

Planted in fall 2007.
This is an Ex-plant now.

This is 'Pink Parasols'.  Planted originally behind the mugo pines and aronia in the garden, to fill in that far edge, and they did well.

Replanted to Northern Exposure in 2008.  It did ok, but got some kind of problem late summer ‘08, and leaves turned brown and dropped before fall.

Seems to self seed prolifically.  Moved 3 seedlings to the west side under paperbark maple Fall ‘08, but by Spring ‘09 the seedlings didn’t take.  But the original plant looked good.

2009: moved this again to the Eastside under the porch!

close up 5/26/2010 .... very pretty complex blooms

In May 2010 it looked lovely.  Later the blooms dry to a rosy brown and persist. They're attractive.  Didn't see much fall color.  I'm not noticing seedlings in this location like I did in previous years when it was planted in other spots.

In 2011 and 2012 it began to be hidden behind the Rose of Sharon, and I had a lot of trouble keeping it from flopping. The brittle stems are profuse and they lay down. It is now perhaps in too much shade. It never colors in fall.

The blooms are still very pretty at Memorial Day and into June.

Even after they go by in summer, the dried flowers are nice.

In 2013 I took this spirea out. It was still a nice plant, the blooms were pretty, but it had gotten very crowded behind the Rose of Sharon and with the expanding dwarf deutzias below it.

It flopped a lot, and between propping it up and keeping it open under the Rose of Sharon, it was a lot of work. The space needed to be opened up. I wasn't able to save enough of it to replant elsewhere.

It is now an ex-plant.

Propagation:
Replant sprouts.
