The Gardens

Pyrus calleryana / Bradford Pear

This is an ex-plant.  It did not survive the 2011 early snow storm.

Planted in spring 2005.

We had Moreno plant this.  I think it is 'Aristocrat' (Coppery yellow fall color, leaves have wavy margins).  Leaves hold very late.

White blossoms in early spring are beautiful.  I pruned vertical branches in ‘06 ‘07, need to do it again while the tree is still moderately small.  Narrow crotches are a problem, although 'Aristocrat' is more horizontal.  The lower wide spreading branches on this tree have continued and even gotten wider as it has matured.

It is supposed to have good fall color, but I haven’t seen it yet, maybe as it matures? Fall ‘08 it was muted yellow.  OK color, but I expected the maroon & wine color that other pears show!

It gets lots of root suckers that I prune off constantly.

In fall little orange berry like fruits form, and then all on one day in November the birds swarm it and strip the fruit.

2009 - Fall color was again a muddy yellow.
