The Gardens

Ceanothus americanus / New Jersey Tea

Planted four in spring 2010 from Broken Arrow Nursery, but only one survives along the edge of the gravel garden.

They bloomed profusely in the first season, very nice full white pom poms, like mini lilacs.  They come out after the early spring fothergillas and before the late August caryopteris.
June 29, 2010, first season in the garden.
These should stay 3 feet tall at maturity. No pruning or cutback is needed. They struggle here -- they really want depleted, sandy soil and my garden areas are too rich and too moist. They are getting outcompeted by the nearby dwarf deutzias.

Like caryopteris, New Jersey Tea has a twiggy form that is nice in winter and looks great in the snow.

There was only one of the original four shrubs left in 2013.

A good profile of Ceanothus americanus here.
