The Gardens

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi / Kinnikinnik (Bearberry)

Planted several in spring 2007. This is a woody groundcover.

For years the patch by the front walk spread and filled the whole ground between the walk and the front porch, but by 2016 it had declined, and only a few plants are left now.

The plants I have are apparently the species, and not a popularly sold cultivar  'Massachusetts'. The cultivar has much smaller, tiny leaves than the species.

Here are the original plants in 2010:
9/11/10

The leaves are glossy, very nice looking and the tiny flowers are pink bells, almost blueberry-like.

I have planted snowdrops and crocuses and tiny iris reticulata to come up through the greenery in spring.

In 2014 there was a lot of winter burn for the first time, and it looked pretty awful. I pruned out the browned areas but kinnikinnik does not take well to pruning.
April 2, 2014 After a tough, very cold winter.

Only a few plants are left now.
