Planted in spring 2013. But it did not survive its first winter, and in 2014 this was gone.
But I planted another, Styrax japonicus 'Evening Light' in 2014.
The first one was var. 'fargesii', an upright form of styrax that can be pruned and kept narrower. I got it at Broken Arrow.
It was planted in the border along the gravel garden, near the new arbor, to provide some shade from the western sun at that end of the seating area. Even as a young, new transplant it was leafy and it flowered beautifully in late May.

But it did not return in 2014 and never leafed out, so I had to remove it.
In 2014 I got 'Evening Light' from Wayside Gardens and planted it under the guest room window where the Oklahoma redbud had been years before. It is a much smaller tree, and will only get to about 6 feet high, basically a tall shrub.
Foliage is dark purple. Flowers are the typical white snowbells. I hope this will be a striking plant seen close up along the walk and right under the guest room window.
* * * * oh no! After surviving under three feet of snow all winter, 'Evening Light' emerged alive. Still a small stick, it had promising buds. But Jim accidentally stepped on it in April when he was putting up the screens -- he is so sorry. It was just a brown stick against brown dirt, not really visible, and he did not know it was there. He snapped it right off. Sigh . . .
Now an ex-plant as of April 2015.
