I planted several varieties in 2008, but in the end they either did not come back, or self seeded and came in differently.
'Black Barlow' is the only one that does come true from seed, is a deep red one with yellow centers.
All columbines like shade, but they do well in almost full sun in cooler climates.
I am not really liking columbines in my garden, at least not as I'm using them. The clumps are not that attractive, the spikes look awkward. They get leaf miners, so I just cut the foliage back and it regrows healthy, but it leaves a gap in the garden after blooming.
Columbines might be nicer naturalized in the woods, not out in the open spring garden.
I get lots of seedlings, so there will always be a variety of columbines! The only ones that seem to be propagating themselves are the purple ones, despite having planted lots of named varieties in yellow and white and pink.

In 2013 all the yellow and white columbines are gone, but purple ones pop up all over.

And 'Black Barlow' continues to come back, and made a nice show in 2013.
