Quercus bicolor / Swamp White Oak

Planted in spring 2009.

I put this in the meadow in front of the back hill.  Got a large sapling from Bosco's.

It was growing nicely in 2010, but the heat and drought started to defoliate it, and it dropped a lot of leaves.  It should be ok, though.

In 2011 you could see it lit up at the base of the hill, still small.

In 2013 the swamp white oak gained some size and looked good. It is in a spot in the meadow that catches the light late in the day.

There were acorns this year!

In 2013 I noticed for the first time that the bark has become platy and is peeling off. This is a characteristic of swamp white oak.

Early frosts turned the leaves brown overnight, long before other trees in the meadow were affected. There was no fall color, just the sudden browning. The dried leaves hung on, as they do on oaks.

It's getting big and leafy in 2014. It sits out in the meadow and catches the sun while the back hill is in shadow and the effect is nice.

Fall color was good in 2014. It turned coppery and mixed russet tones, before going all brown in winter.

In 2015 it had some real size. The big leaves are almost silvery at times.

It is starting to have a real presence out in the meadow, silhouetted against the woods of the back hill.

Fall 2015 was very good for fall color in all the oaks, but I don't remember this swamp white oak coloring up very much.
