Silphium / Cup Plant

Silphium perfoliatum

Becky brought a cup plant in a plastic bag all the way from Kentucky to Missouri when we met there in May 2011, and I carried it back on the airplane.  I planted it in the berm, then moved in in spring of 2012 to the edge of the meadow where it is more appropriate, and can grow as big as it wants.

It can get to about 8 feet tall!  The leaves form a whorl around a square stem, making a cup that holds water, and the birds love it.
