Juniperus chinensis conferta / Dwarf Chinese Juniper

Planted three 'Pfitzeriana Compacta' in spring 2007.
Added 'Casino Gold' in spring 2010.
Added three low growing 'Silver Mist' in 2013.

I put three 'Pfitzeriana Compacta' under the white paper birch trees. This dwarf variety can still become 6 feet wide, and they have become quite spreading. They really aren't compact, despite the name.

The little 'Casino Gold' dwarf juniper planted next to one of the paper birches is a small tidy plant. It won't grow to the size of the 'Pfitzeriana Compacta' plants, which are very big and spreading.

In fall the junipers under the birch trees are a nice contrast.

Being so horizontal, and somewhat stiffly branched, they tolerate snow loads well.

They are always a nice foil under the birches to the red sumacs in fall.

Two of the low, flat 'Silver Mist' junipers are planted at the dry creek bed bridge and one is at the edge of the gravel garden under the sourwood tree. None of them is doing very well, though, and the pretty silvery cast to the needles has gone green.

The wide spreading Pfitzeriana junipers flanking either side of two birches reached a point in 2015 where their stiff foliage looked feathery. They make a good lower level beneath the trees, showcasing the white bark against their waves of green. Nice.

Their branches brown in areas at times -- in summer the sprinklers hit the branches and junipers do not like water on their needles. I cut off any browned areas each year and they seem to be fine.
