We came back from Holland in 2008 and after seeing Keukenhof Gardens, I had to plant tulip bulbs that fall.

I had little hope for tulips in my garden, but the black and white combo of 'Queen of Night' with 'Triumphator' along the garage wall lining the front walk has worked out so well.  These are sold together by Whiteflower Farm, which is where I got them (we didn't bring back any bulbs from Holland).

They were not bothered by any pests, and the combination was very nice in 2009 and came back better than ever in the second year, in 2010.

I got confidant enough to plant more tulips, so in fall 2010 I added the delicate pink and green-streaked viridiflora tulip 'Groenland'.

But fall 2010 was when the vole invasion hit, and the whole strip along the garage wall was nothing but tunnels, uprooted plants and soft earth.  I have very little hope of seeing any 'Groenland' much less the other tulips in spring.

'Groenland' from Dave's Garden files

In fall 2011 I planted tulips in pots for next spring.  No more tulips in the ground. I put 6 'Spring Green'(white with green marks) in the center of each pot and surrounded them with 12 'Groenland'.

Bleeagh.

The pots of viridiflora green streaked tulips were uninspiring.  Too pale, the floppy foliage was distracting, and they just didn't mass well together in the pot.  Too pale and delicate for this approach.

And, the deer came up on the front porch and chomped them, undeterred by the bluestone steps.

I think I am done with tulips.

Other than buying new each year, they are ex-plants for me!
