Cornus Mas / Coneliancherry Dogwood

4/10/13

Planted a 10 inch twig from Broken Arrow Nursery in spring 2010, along the driveway.

It's supposed to be 'Aurea Variegata' with gold edged foliage, but the leaves are plain green, and I think this reverted to stock.

Added one in spring 2011 from Woodland Gardens, planted in the back behind the Birch Garden, near the Austrian pines.

This can be a big shrub or a small, limbed up tree. It gets red berry fruits that the birds love. In late March and early April Cornus mas gets yellow flowers before any foliage, like a big forsythia, only more elegant.

It will grow to 25 feet, 15 wide.

Cornus mas was in bloom in mid May in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
5/14/13 a mature one, limbed up at Berkshire Botanical.
This is the shape and form I am going for.

In summer the leaves curl, typical of dogwoods, and they give Cornus mas a desiccated look in late summer and fall. The leaves just look droopy and shriveled, although they seem to be okay. It's just the look.

Fall color is not very colorful, but a soft russet. Neither corneliancherry has fruited yet. No berries.

Here's a picture of Cornus Mas in bloom taken March 26 at Battery Park by Marie Viljoen at 66 Square Feet.
